About (CDT):
CDT & MLD Continued...
Dependent on your diagnosis, you may receive intensive therapy via daily MLD treatments and multi-layered bandaging during initiation of services. However, once you have reached the maintenance phase, the frequencies of MLD treatments are reduced and the recommendation of compression garments is provided.
Compression Therapy is essential in the management of Lymphedema and will assist in diminished swelling long term. It can maintain and enhance the results achieved by MLD. Compression therapy may need to be utilized 24 hours a day, however once the edematous limb stabilizes a compression garment is initiated.
There are two types of compression therapy, compression bandaging and compression garment.
Compression Bandaging is completed for a short period of time during an active management phase, for example: 1 to 4 weeks while receiving MLD. Bandaging assists in reducing the size of limbs.
Compression Garments are more practical than bandages and more comfortable to wear once the limb is a more normal size. They are made of an elastic fiber that allows for a non-bulky and natural limb contour. Compression garments can be ready made or custom made, your therapist can advise on the best choice to ensure the best fit.
