About Speech Pathology:
Speech-Language Pathology Continued...
Speech-Language Pathology can be effective as a treatment option for the following:
- - cognitive aspects of communication (e.g., attention, memory, problem solving, executive function)
- swallowing/dysphagia or other upper aerodigestive functions, which refers to a complex of organs that, in total, make up the tissues and organs of the upper respiratory tract and the upper part of the digestive tract. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
* Lips and mouth tissues
* Tongue
* Nose
* Throat
* Vocal cords
* Portions of the esophagus and windpipe (evaluation of esophageal function is for the purpose of referral to medical professionals)
- voice (i.e. hoarseness/dysphonia, poor vocal volume/hypophonia, abnormal vocal quality (e.g. rough, breathy, strained). Research has been proven to demonstrate voice therapy to be especially helpful with certain patient populations, such as individuals with Parkinson's Disease, who often develop voice issues as a result of their disease.
- speech (i.e., phonation, articulation, fluency, resonance, and voice including aeromechanical components of respiration)
- language (i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatic/social aspects of communication) including comprehension and expression in oral, written, graphic, and manual modalities; language processing; preliteracy and language-based literacy skills, phonological awareness.
- sensory awareness related to communication, swallowing, or other upper aerodigestive functions.
